▸ Understanding leather grades & finishes

Leather grades

Full-grain — the top layer of the hide with its natural grain left intact (not sanded or buffed). The strongest and most durable grade. Left smooth and unfinished it develops a patina over time; with a pebbled or protective finish it keeps a more even, consistent look instead.

Top-grain — the same top layer, lightly sanded to even out imperfections and usually sealed with a finish. Thinner and more uniform, slightly less durable.

Split leather (suede) — the soft lower layer of the hide, left once the top grain is split off. Suede is a split buffed to a velvety nap. Less durable than grain leather, but a genuine material valued for its texture.

Corrected-grain — leather whose natural grain has been sanded away to hide flaws, with an artificial grain then embossed and a pigment coating applied in its place. It is the sanding-off of the real grain — not the texture itself — that separates it from full-grain. This is what is most often sold under the label "genuine leather."

Bonded leather — leather scraps ground up, bonded with polyurethane and embossed. The lowest grade — often only 10–20% real leather.

About "genuine leather": "genuine" only confirms an item contains real leather — it says nothing about the grade. It is also one of the most-searched leather terms online, so reputable sellers and budget makers alike include it in their listings to be found; on its own it tells you nothing about quality. The honest high grades carry their own names (full-grain, top-grain), so when a bag lists no grade or leans on "genuine leather" alone, the material is usually corrected-grain or lower. Judge by the grade, not the label.

Surface finishes

Pebbled grain — a fine, even pebble texture pressed into the hide under heat and pressure (on our bags, the Italian "Dollaro" pattern). The texture is added to the surface, not a cover-up for grain that has been sanded off. The raised pebbling scatters light and disguises everyday scuffs, so the bag keeps a fresh look longer — the trade-off is a tactile, understated surface rather than the high-gloss sheen of smooth leather.

Protective finish — many of our pebbled-leather bags carry a protective surface treatment that locks in the color and helps the leather resist daily wear and scuffs. It gives the surface a smoother, sealed feel — the same approach used by many European leather houses — and is a sign of a sealed, hard-wearing leather, not a synthetic one.

Metallic finish — on our metallic styles, a fine metallic foil is bonded onto the leather (or suede) with heat and pressure, becoming part of the surface rather than a coating laid on top. Because it is fused into the leather, the metallic effect won't crack, flake, or rub off — it is made to last the life of the bag.

The zippers and interior pockets are strong and i love that it has 2 types of handles. The large size allows a lot of contents in the bag and overall i really love it! The quality is nice for the price, zipper, seams, etc. Even comes with a nice dust bag. Unfortunately it’s shipped flat so there is a crease in the leather from being folded.
